In this new episode, I speak with my guest Martin Herzberg about the categories of serious and popular music. These categories raise various questions: Is serious music not allowed to entertain? Is popular music not to be taken seriously?
As soon as Martin could, he swapped his first instrument, the violin, for the piano as a child and quickly began not only to play, but also to compose. His current compositions are somewhere between Ludovico Einaudi and Yann Tiersen. (You know these two colleagues from the soundtracks to “Intouchables” and “Amelie”). Martin is a true Berliner and a musician through and through. He has worked his way up to his audience over the years and fills the Berlin Philharmonic, among other venues. Now he is sitting in front of the microphone for the first time as part of my podcast and talking to me about the pigeonholes of music.
